About Us

Milwaukee College Prep Mission and History

Milwaukee College Prep is a network of four K-8 public charter schools that every child in the City of Milwaukee is eligible to attend free of charge.  With a mission of “knowledge plus character pave the road to college and beyond,” we make every decision based on what is best for our scholars. 18 years ago Marva Collins Preparatory School opened as a rigorous K-4 school with 76 scholars in a city that sorely needed high performing schools.  Today, renamed Milwaukee College Prep, we have grown to a four-campus public charter school network, educating nearly 2,000 children in some of the most underserved communities in Milwaukee’s central city.  We have managed this growth without diluting our effectiveness.  In fact, we have seen the reverse.  As we welcome more dedicated, mission-driven staff to our team, we have seen growth in all subject areas across all campuses.  We attribute this to a strong culture of collaboration and teamwork not just within a campus, but across campuses, cementing our belief that a rising tide lifts all boats.

Milwaukee College Prep Philosophy

We absolutely believe that an uncompromising K-8 education is the difference between dreams realized and dreams denied. If a child can’t read, problem-solve, draw inferences, think critically, be self-disciplined and self-determined, that child will not realize his or her dreams…he or she won’t even come close. We also know that after a rigorous Milwaukee College Prep education in a loving environment, our scholars, not their demography, will determine their destiny. With test scores and graduation rates that rival even the most prosperous districts across the state, Milwaukee College Prep alums are doing just that in high performing high schools and colleges across the country.

Milwaukee College Prep Campuses

The numbers have grown, but the philosophy is the same as it was on day one in 1997. It’s not about being a great school educating more than 1,900 students; it’s about educating more than 1,900 individual students in a great way.

The Scholars

We believe that a child’s zip code should not determine his or her destiny. Every day, nearly 2,000 Milwaukee College Prep scholars prove that Milwaukee need not be home to one of the nation’s largest race-based achievement gaps. Admission at Milwaukee College Prep is based on a blind lottery regardless of prior academic record, conduct or socioeconomic background. Every Milwaukee College Prep scholar represents the huge potential of thousands of Milwaukee children just like them.

The Teachers

The recent comprehensive study by the Gates Foundation confirms that the number one predictor of student achievement is not race or socio-economic status, but teacher quality.  Milwaukee College Prep’s philosophy that children do not fail, schools do, places the bulk of that responsibility squarely on our teachers’ shoulders.  Recognizing this, it is our responsibility to put the best possible teacher in front of every classroom every day and to provide that teacher with quality ongoing support and feedback in an environment where great teaching flourishes.
