About Us

Milwaukee College Prep Mission

Milwaukee College Prep is a free, K-8 public charter school that every child in the City of Milwaukee is eligible to attend, whose mission is “Knowledge plus character pave the road to college and beyond.”

Milwaukee College Prep Philosophy

We absolutely believe that an uncompromising K-8 education is the difference between dreams realized and dreams denied. If a child can’t read, problem-solve, draw inferences, think critically, be self-disciplined and self-determined, that child will not realize his or her dreams…he or she won’t even come close. We also know that after a rigorous Milwaukee College Prep education in a loving environment, our scholars, not their demography, will determine their destiny. With test scores and graduation rates that rival even the most prosperous districts across the state, Milwaukee College Prep alums are doing just that in high performing high schools and colleges across the country.

Milwaukee College Prep Campuses

The numbers have grown, but the philosophy is the same as it was on day one in 1997. It’s not about being a great school educating more than 1,900 students; it’s about educating more than 1,900 individual students in a great way.

The Achievers

We believe that a child’s zip code should not determine his or her destiny. A textbook illustration of this absolute determination is Shaq, a young scholar who faced enormous challenges in his young life. During his tenure at Milwaukee College Prep, he was placed in the role of caregiver to his younger siblings. Determined, he showed the same resolve at school as he did at home. Working with our Alumni Director, Shaq secured a scholarship to St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, where after a period of transition, he flourished as a scholar, athlete and musician. With a GPA of 3.9 and a resumé filled with varsity sports and bagpiping, he will soon be heading off to college. He is just one of thousands of Milwaukee College Prep scholars who are defining their own destiny and demonstrating what is possible.

The Difference

Teacher quality is the number one predictor of student achievement. Our goal is to provide every scholar with the very best, determined, optimistic, mission-driven teacher, and then provide an environment in which great teaching and learning flourishes. Using every single minute to provide personalized, data-driven instruction and combining that with a heavy dose of love and support, Milwaukee College Prep teachers really make all the difference.

The Results

2011/2012 was our best year ever, with scholars from our 36th Street Campus outpacing their peers across the state in every subject!

Because our 38th Street and Lloyd Street Campuses have been MPS charters for less than a year, the scores will provide a baseline against which we measure future growth. However, when we took over the campus we relocated to Lloyd Street last year, the scores were just 14% Advanced and Proficient in Math and 26% in Reading. Today, 50% scored Advanced and Proficient for both Math and Reading — a huge leap in just 15 months from takeover to testing!

When considering these results, please remember that these are the same wonderful kids that populate our urban schools across Milwaukee and they have proven that we cannot stand by and accept that Milwaukee is home to one of the nation’s largest race-based achievement gaps.
